Instrument Rating

Summary

Title: Group 1 Instrument Rating

Prerequisites: Private Pilot Licence or Commercial Pilot Licence

Schedule: Part-Time or Full-Time

Intake: Continuous

Duration: 1 month (Depends on student schedule)

Cost: Varies based on previous flight experience

Program of Study

Ground School is not mandatory for the Instrument Rating but is highly recommended. Students must be prepared to obtain a minimum mark of 70% on the Transport Canada written examination which includes the following areas:

  • Canadian Aviation Regulations
  • Instrument Flight Rules and Procedures
  • Meteorology
  • Instruments
  • Radio and Radar Systems
  • Navigation

The amount of flight instruction required will depend on the student’s previous flight experience. To obtain an Instrument Rating, the following minimum flight time requirements must be met:

  • 50 Hours Cross-Country Pilot-In-Command
  • 40 Hours Instrument Time (Max 20 in Simulator)
  • 100 nm IFR Cross-Country

The student will be required to successfully pass a flight test with a Transport Canada certified Flight Test Examiner.

Payment Schedule

Due to the large costs associated with flight training, MAG Aerospace Canada does not expect students to pay tuition fees upfront or in large installments. MAG Aerospace Canada utilizes the “Pay-Per-Lesson” method, where the student settles their invoice after each lesson.

Since the cost of the program is highly dependent on the level of instrument and cross-country hours already held, it is best to sit down 1-on-1 with one of our instructors to map out a training plan and estimated cost for the program.

Graduation

Students graduate the program when they have successfully passed a flight test with a Transport Canada certified Flight Test Examiner.

Enrollment

Enrollment for this program is continuous, meaning students can start flight training toward the Group 1 Instrument Rating at any time. However, MAG Canada does not generally do these ratings between April-August because of the aircraft being committed to aerial wildfire detection contracts.
